Belgrade Attractions - Sahat Gate and Sahat Tower from the list Belgrade Attractions are located on the main path to the Upper Town at Kalemegdan, they are witnesses of the development of architecture in under two reigns. Sahat Gate from the list Belgrade Attractions was built in the 17th century during the repair of the then damaged southeastern walls, and the architect of the project was Andrea Cornar. Before the 19th century the gate was called Kornareva gate, but was later named after the tower that was built above it.
The tower was built between 1688 and 1690, under two different authorities. Andrea Cornar was originally hired to work on the project of construction of the tower by the Austrian authorities, but continued the project under the auspices of the Turkish government after the Turks had hijacked the Belgrade fortress.
Within the Sahat Gate there are casemates, which were then used to accommodate guards, weapons and other military material. Today, it is the home of the Gallery of the Belgrade fortress.
The internal Stambol Gate and the Sahat Gate were connected by a wooden bridge, beneath which a deep trench was dug. The bridges were wooden so that in case of attack they could be burned, and the attackers would not be able to access the inside of the gate due to the deep trenches.
Construction began on the Sahat Tower in 1740 and was completed in 1789, the height is 27.5 meters, and its name literally means Clock tower or tower of Clocks.
Working hours of Sahat Tower is 11am to 7pm daily from Monday to Sunday. Ticket price is 80.00 dinars, a discounted ticket costs 40.00 dinars for students and pensioners.
