After gaining independence from the Ottomans, a society for building a church in honor of Saint Sava was founded by some 100 of the most prominent citizens or Belgrade. The very place where his remains were burned by the Ottomans in the 16th century was chosen and the construction began in May of 1935.

During all major religious holidays the temple is full of people who come to pay their respects and pray, not just from Belgrade and Serbia, but many of the neighbouring countries as well.
